Free Beginning Tennis Program for 6th Graders

The Sixth-Grade Tennis Program teaches the fundamentals of tennis ground strokes, volleys, and sportsmanship to beginning players in the sixth grade at each of the seven Ann Arbor Public Schools that have sixth graders. The program is free to players, and AAACTA provides balls and rackets (or players may use their own rackets). The program uses adult volunteers and high school tennis players to teach the six 1.25-hour sessions at each school.

The tennis sessions will begin the week of April 26, with the specific day for each school listed under Information for Parents & Players. The sessions will begin at about 3:15pm and end at 4:30pm (this may vary a little due to availability of volunteers and high school coaches). All sessions will be held outdoors. In case of rain or other inclement weather, the session that day will be canceled. All sixth graders and coaches will be required to wear masks, and distancing will be employed. Hand sanitizer will be available, but sixth graders and coaches must bring their own water bottles. Students are invited to join the program at any time, but the sooner they join, the more tennis they will learn.
